Manchester City booked their place in the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley with a 6-0 thrashing of Burnley at the Etihad. Erling Haaland scored his sixth hat-trick of the season while Julian Alvarez scored a brace. Cole Palmer also added his name to the score sheet sealing a crushing win for the Citizens.
The Return of Vincent Kompany
The match against Burnley saw former Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany return to the club for the first time since 2019. The Citizens gave Kompany a warm reception as the former player won 10 titles at the club and has a statue outside the stadium.
Erling Haaland continued his good scoring run this week with two goals in the first half. The Norwegian scored his first goal in the 32nd minute thanks to a Julian Alvarez through ball. His goal second goal came 3 minutes later thanks to a neat finish after the forward was put in by Phil Foden. Manchester City went into the half time break with a 2-0 lead.
Vincent Kompany made two halftime changes to try and change his teams’ fortunes. Burnley managed to keep the goals quiet for 14 minutes before Phil Foden’s shot hit the right post. The ball fell into the path of an expectant Erling Haaland, and he dispatched it. As a result, Manchester City went ahead 3-0.
Burnley had hardly taken a breath before Julian Alvarez finished a Kevin De Bruyne cross to make the score 4-0. Cole Parmer scored a rare goal in the 68th minute to make the score 5-0. The scoring was wrapped up in the 73rd minute thanks to Julian Alvarez’s second goal. The Blues were ruthless with the match ending 6-0.
Manchester City had a total of 20 shots with 10 hitting the target. The Blues dominated possession with 57 % while Burnley secured 43 % possession.
FA cup Semi-Final Appearances
The Citizens have made it to the FA Cup Semi-finals six times in the seven years under Pep Guardiola.
In Pep Guardiola’s first season in 2016/17 Manchester City reached the Semi-Final and played against Arsenal. Unfortunately, The Blues lost to The Gunners thanks to a goal by Sanchez in the 101st minute of extra time. Arsenal went on to win the tournament against Chelsea.
2017/18 was the worst performance of Manchester City under Pep Guardiola. The Citizens were knocked out 1-0 in a shock result by Wigan Athletic in the fifth round. Chelsea went on to win their 8th title that year with Manchester United finishing runners up.
Manchester City won their 6th title and the first for manager Pep Guardiola. City went on to win the a domestic treble securing the Carabao Cup and the English Premier League title. Gabriel Jesus top scored 5 goals in the tournament that year.
The Blues reached the semi-final after defeating 2-0 Newcastle in the quarter final. Manchester City drew Arsenal in the semi-final at Wembley. Unfortunately, the game ended in defeat for Manchester City thanks to 2 goals by Aubameyang. Arsenal went on to defeat Chelsea in the final to clinch their 14th title.
In 2020/21 season the Blues reached the semi-finals again booking a match against Chelsea FC. In a tightly contested match the Citizens were defeated 1-0 thanks to a Ziyech goal. Chelsea went on to get defeated by Leicester City 1-0 who secured their first FA Cup title.
Pep Guardiola’s side booked their place in the semi-final after defeating Southampton 4-1 in the quarter final. Robbie Fowler was responsible for the semi -final draw setting up a touch match between Liverpool and Manchester City. Liverpool dominated Manchester City winning 2-3 and set up a match against Chelsea. Liverpool went on to win the FA cup for the 8th time.
The Blues have had a tough run in the FA Cup starting the tournament with a match against Chelsea who they defeated 4-0 in the third round. In the Fourth Round Manchester City were drawn against Arsenal. Manchester City defeated Arsenal 1-0 securing passage into the quarter final to face Burnley. Burnley suffered a heavy 6-0 defeat against the Blues. The Blues await to face Sheffield United in the Semi-Final.
