Julian Alvarez has signed a new one-year deal at Manchester following an impressive World Cup campaign. The 23-year-old centre-forward signs a contract that keeps him at Manchester City until 2028. As a result Alvarez will earn a weekly wage of £100 000 and annually this will sum up to £5200000. The contract does not have a known release clause.

Rise of Julian Alvarez

Youth Career

Alvarez recently arrived in Manchester in July 2022. Manchester City bought the player in January 2022 for €21.4 million from River Plate in Argentina. The forward has always caught the eye from a young age.

At the age of 11 in 2011 he went for trials at Real Madrid in the Spanish capital. The player scored 2 goals in 5 games in the Peralanda tournament. Despite impressing Alvarez could not transfer to Madrid as he was underage. Real Madrid requires players from overseas to be at least 13 years of age and the move would require the family to relocate. Alvarez also went for trials with Boca Junior before signing for River Plate juniors in 2016.

Senior Career

First seasons at River Plate

2018 saw Alvarez moved to the senior team and he made his debut on 27 October 2018 against Aldosivi as a substitute. He had appearances as a substitute failing to score any goals as he adapted to the Primera Division in 2018.

The 2018/19 season saw some improvements as he increased his influence playing 8 games in all competitions with 3 starts. Alvarez scored 2 goals and provided an assist playing as a forward mostly and being used as a right and attacking midfielder at times.

Breakthrough season at River Plate

As Alvarez gained more experienced and gained more acceptance in the River Plate team as a forward he got more game time. The 2021 season proved to be a breakthrough season for the young Argentine. Out of 38 games played in all competitions the forward started 25 times. Julian Alvarez repaid the coaches faith in him by scoring 20 goals and providing 7 assists. These figures caught the eye of suitors in Europe, and it was only a matter of time before a transfer.

On 31st of January 2022 Manchester City secured the services of the Argentine and sent him back on loan to River Plate until July 2022.  He played out the rest of the season scoring 10 goals providing 5 assists.  Julian caught the eye in a Copa Libertadores group stage match against Alianza Lima of Peru where he scored 6 goals.

In his 122  appearances for River Plate he scored 54 goals and provided 31 assists.

Manchester City

Julian Alvarez has hit the ground running making 34 appearances in the Premier League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup, UEFA Champions, and FA Community shield. In this period he has scored 12 goals.

FA Community shield

Alvarez made his competitive debut as second half substitute  against Liverpool on the 30th July 2022. Manchester City lost 3-1  but Julian came in and made an impact scoring a goal in the 70th minute. He showed his predatory instincts when he pounced on Phil Foden saved shot finishing from close range.

In the Premier League

Julian Alvarez made his Premier League debut against West Ham on the 7th of August 2022 as a second half substitute.  He made his full debut against Nottingham Forest on the 31st of August and scored 2 goals in the 65th and 87th minute. The Argentine has gone on to make 20 appearances 6 in the starting eleven and 14 as a substitute. He has score 5 goals from his 11 shots on target.

In domestic Cups

Julian has played 3 FA cup and 2 EFL Cup games this season. In the 2 games played in the EFL cup Alvarez has scored 1 goal against Chelsea in the 2-0 win in the Third round. Unfortunately, Manchester City were knocked out against Southampton in the quarterfinals.

Alvarez has played 4 times in FA Cup against Chelsea, Arsenal, and Bristol City. He has three goals he scored against Chelsea and Burnley and 2 assists.

UEFA Champions League

In his first season in Europe Alvarez has played 7 times starting 4 games and being a substitute 3 times. He has scored 2 times and assisted 2 times with his best game coming in the Group stages against Sevilla. In that game at the Etihad he scored and provided two assists to Rico Lewis and Riyad Mahrez.

The Argentine was overjoyed at signing a contract extension at Manchester City. Alvarez is pleased at the reception he has received since he arrived from Argentina in July 2022. Manchester City has made his stay in England as comfortable as possible.

Alvarez has had to adapt fast to the requirements of the Premier League. He noted the hard work that he has had to put in since his arrival. Julian described how he has had to adjust to the flow of the game, the transition and tactics employed in the Premier League.

The forward has also set himself goals to make as much of an impact to the teams’ performances when he gets opportunities to play. The forward is determined to chase as many accolades as possible as City are in three competitions so far.

The Argentine has big shoes to fill if he is to match or surpass fellow Argentine forward Sergio Aguero.
